Balthazar looked down upon the soldiers pouring into his castle from his throne room, watching them in seething anger.

“I don’t understand! How can PEASANTS defeat an army?!” He punched the wall next to him, his gauntlet cracking stone. The pieces tattered onto the floor. “This was not supposed to happen!” He grabbed his helmet and went to the base of his throne.

“This is mine,” he hissed, looking up at the golden mantle before him. He slowly ascended the short steps and sat upon his throne, looking out at his court. A soldier entered the throne room from a secret door in the wall. She walked over to one of the guards, whispering in his ear.

“My king,” the guard called, kneeling before Balthazar.

He nodded.

“Leland’s forces are on their way here. We need to leave now before—”

“LET THEM COME!” Balthazar thundered, shaking the room. “No one here is leaving! If they think they can destroy what I have built, then they shall taste my blade!” He pulled his dark sword from its sheath and rested the tip on the stone tile beneath his feet. “Leland brought his men to me so I can put them down like the dogs they are! I will drive back these interlopers and reclaim what is MINE!”

He froze as he heard the first thump on the large wooden doors…
